You’ve finally got the hair colour of your dreams. You spent hours in the salon with me getting it just right and spent a fair bit of money in the process too. It was worth every penny, but you want to maximise your investment and keep your new look looking gorgeous for as long as possible. Here’s everything you need to know about caring for coloured hair…

Follow My Aftercare Advice

Education and aftercare are all part of the service. If I’m colouring your hair, I’ll always tell you how to look after it. Then, it’s up to you to follow my good advice. If I recommend using a purple shampoo to keep your blonde looking fresh and bright, do it! If I tell you your hair needs a hydrating mask, I mean it! There’s never any pressure to purchase products, I just want the best for your hair. Although, when you buy from a salon owner, you’re supporting their small business as well as the brand. Isn’t that nice?!

Always Use Salon-Quality Products

Your hair deserves the best, especially if you’re spending money to have it coloured. Next time you’re shopping for shampoo or conditioner, ask yourself this: what’s the point of spending your hard-earned cash on your gorgeous locks, just to smother it in supermarket-quality products? You wouldn’t invest in a Ferrari then wash it with fairy liquid, would you?

Think of shampoo like wine. It’s all made from grapes, but we know the cheaper bottles don’t taste as good and are guaranteed to give us a raging hangover. More time, care and quality ingredients are used to make the more expensive bottles, both wine and shampoo. If you want your colour to last, invest in a colour protective or low sulphate shampoo and don’t scrimp on the quality.

Conditioner is Key!

Colouring your hair makes it more fragile. This means the oils, butters and other hydrating ingredients in conditioner need to work double duty. I know we’re all busy, but a 2 in 1 product isn’t going to cut it, and you can’t replace regular conditioner with a weekly hair mask. To restore moisture and seal the cuticle, you need to be conditioning your hair after every shampoo. Regular deep conditioning treatments, either at home or in the salon, will take softness and shine to the next level.

Heat Protection, Always

In an ideal world, you’d avoid, or at least limit the amount of heat you use on your hair. As we’ve established, colouring your hair makes it more fragile, so too much heat styling could lead to frazzled locks which is never a good look. If abandoning heat completely is out of the question, good heat protection is essential. Don’t even think about adding curls to your hair without it! And if blow-drying is usually the first step in your styling routine, try airdrying instead.

Be Sun Smart

With summer just around the corner, it’s a good time to remind you that UV light from the sun can play havoc with your hair colour. Cover up if you can (your scalp will thank you too) and look for products with UV filters.
