You’ve found your wedding hairstylist, now you just need to figure out what you want them to do. So, how do you choose your bridal hairstyle? First things first, if you’re confused about what you want, DON’T PANIC!! I’m here to help! At your wedding hair trial, we’ll discuss your overall wedding vibe, look at your dress, and decide on a style that will suit you and the wedding you’re planning. In the meantime, here are some top tips and a few things to consider…

Say Yes to the Dress!

Generally, I won’t even discuss hairstyles until you’ve chosen ‘the one’ – meaning the dress, not your fiancé! So much revolves around the dress. It sets the tone for the entire day, influencing everything from colour schemes to venue décor.

Even if you think you know what your dress will be like, a lot of brides go for something completely different. Your hairstyle should complement your dress, but overall, you should choose a look that makes you feel beautiful and is comfortable to wear. Here are a few ideas to help you pair the perfect hairstyle with your dream dress…

High-Neck – High up-dos such as top knots and buns really complement this style, showing off the dress’s detail and elongating the neck.

Bateau Necklines – It’s almost as if low up-dos were invented for this style of dress. A high ponytail can also provide a modern twist.

V-Neck – If you aren’t afraid of showing a little skin, an elegant up-do will make a feature of your décolleté, while a low up-do can look soft and romantic. This style is also perfect for wearing your hair down with some loose waves.

Strapless – A number of hairstyles complement this popular silhouette. An up-do really shows off the style of the dress while wearing your hair down can look playful and romantic.

Backless – A personal favourite. This is a design detail you don’t want to cover up, so a low up-do is perfect. Alternatively, be bold and go high with loose tendrils framing the face to soften the look.

Fabric – As well as the style of your dress, you should consider the fabric and texture. For lacey or heavily beaded designs, I’d suggest a simple hairstyle that isn’t too busy.

Gather Inspo

Pinterest is still the most popular place for bridal hair inspiration. I’d also recommend scrolling through your chosen hairstylist’s gallery or Instagram feed. There’s so much inspiration online, it’s easy to become overwhelmed, so to avoid this it’s a good idea to refine your search and be specific. At first, you want to look for styles featuring the same hair colour, texture and length as your own. There’s actually a big difference between how certain styles look on blonde or brunette hair. For example, texture and details such as braids can get lost in darker hair.

Think Outside the Box

Your bridal hair doesn’t have to be a traditional bridal style! I will never stop banging on about the importance of looking and feeling like the best version of yourself on your wedding day. Don’t get me wrong, I love an elegant updo, but if the thought is giving you heart palpitations, we can discuss other options. This is your day, and the most important thing is that you feel comfortable, confident and beautiful. The person you’re marrying already loves everything about you – I’m just here to add a little sparkle!
